I just bought a seagate free agent portable HD (250 GB) for $80. I want to install either Ubuntu or Linux so i could dual boot it with windows. I know how to do it, but I don't know what OS I want. I had Ubuntu on a partition on my laptop's HD and I liked it, but is Linux better or worse? comments, suggestions...thanks.

ubuntu is linux lol

you could try other distros,Linux mint looks nice.

I knew that Linux and Ubuntu were both Unix based, but whats the better one, Ubuntu or Linux? And which version of the 2 is the best?

<twitch> Le sigh...

What your asking is like walking up to someone and saying 'What's better, this orange or a piece of fruit?' Ubuntu is great for beginners to Linux and offers the exact same flexibility serious users need. Get it, try it, enjoy it.

Exactly! lol :P Ubuntu is a VERSION of Linux (usually referred to as a distribution, or distro for short. There's TONS of different distributions... Ubuntu, Mandriva, and openSuSE just to name a few. Basically Linux is a type of UNIX and Ubuntu is a type of Linux.

Yeah Linux is ubuntu

But you have

Ubuntu
Kubuntu
Edubuntu
xubuntu
linux mint

and maybe a few more linux is a great operating system and each one of these different kinds specialize in different areas so look for the one that meets your needs and get it (The first 2 you can get on CD for free www.ubuntu.com)

ok, I now realize that Linux and Ubuntu are the same. So I'm thinking about Ubuntu. any good resources on basic using? Oh, 32 or 64 bit. My vista ultimate is 32 bit, would the 64 bit Ubuntu work on my machine?

Ubuntu is very user friendly
Xubuntu is slightly faster because it doesnt not use KDE/GNOME but rather Xfce, it won't matter unless ur comp is really really slow (Pentium 3-ish)

I would look at the differences between KDE and GNOME since they are the main environments you will be exposed to in Linux. Both work fine, just a matter of preference.

I have Ubuntu on a partition on my portable HD now. How do I tell if its 32 or 64 bit? And I cant get my screen resolution above 800x400 (or something small like that) I tried to install drivers for my graphic card ( nVidia GeForce 7150 M integrated). I looked on the Ubuntu forums and tried some of their recommendations, but nothing helped. Any advice?

I would stick with the 32 bit I would not risk giving your machine more than it can handle.

you will like Ubuntu it is a very simple OS to run and get used to
