Linux OSes

Hey guys!

So I finally got around playing with Mint, installed it side by side with Ubuntu. It seems to be a pretty easy OS for beginners like me and I'm wondering which one between Ubuntu and Mint is the best for let's beginners wanting to use their computer for school (it's a laptop). My specs are pretty low, I have 2GBs of RAM and a crappy Graphic Card (can't find the place for the exact name of the card on Mint :P ).

Also is there any other Linux OSes I should take a look at? And can I have more than two OSes side by side?

Mint is based off Ubuntu, which is based off Debian. I like Mint more than Ubuntu myself :good:

You can load as many distros as you want. You can also take a look at OpenSUSE, Fedora, and Debian.

DistoWatch is a good place to look for the most popular distros.

The number of different or even the same operating systems you can have installed on 1 hard disk drive is limited by your hard disk drive space and nothing else. :D

There is also Linux called Xubuntu,KDE and so on...So you can try those if you want as well.

If you are worried about your HDD space, you can always use DAMN SMALL LINUX! :P

To expand on what STARS and ABenz99 have said already...

KDE is a desktop environment for the Linux systems. Not an OS in itself. Other examples would be XFCE for Xubuntu, LDXE for Lubuntu, KDE for Kubuntu, Gnome and Cinnamon (standard for Mint). There are more but if you want to mess with the Ubuntu variants, that is where they get their names from. If you want to try them out, I would either try them in a VM so you don't mess with re writing boot loaders and partitioning HDDs or install Ubuntu and install the other desktop environments as alternatives to Unity.

Here is a small overview of what is available for just the *buntu systems

Personally, I like the Unity interface once I tweak it a bit. I used to be a huge Cinnamon fan and before that Gnome 2 on Ubuntu 10.04 It's all personal preference.

Lubuntu is a lightweight version of Ubuntu. If you have a slow computer, I'd recommend trying it out!

If you need very very lightweight and good OS I would recommend CrunchBang which only from the start use up to 100MB of RAM and beat Lubuntu in my opinion. I have tested Lubuntu and many other various distros including Mint (which is very good for begginers and have nice design) however I found CrunchBang the best option as you can ran it on very low spec pc.
