Ok,

I would like to install Linux on my comp.

Ive used the Ubuntu Live cd a few times but by defult obviusly i cannot save anything or download anything using the Live cd.

So is it easy to install?

Only i have never installed windows or any other Os before so im compleatly clueless.
Im afraid that i might accidently format my hard drive and lose windows all together as i dont have the windows cd.

Im just afraid of making new partions and that.
Would Ubuntu be the best to install and use for a Linux newbie?
Thanks

Download "partition magic" (free trial) and partition your drive into 3 seperate partitions:

1. Windows thats already there
2. Linux Swap partition (make it approx 2x your RAM, but you shouldn't need anything more than 1GB)
3. Linux partition for your Ubuntu (probably only has to be about 10GB at the most...pretty much default installation size plus a few GB for applications and data)

when you insert the disk, it should find the empty partitions available for Linux and walk you through the install (any ubuntu users can confirm this? Suse doesn't always like pre-made partitions, slackware does, but I've never tried ubuntu)

I've never used ubuntu, but it may include QTparted, which is just as good as partition magic and free.

It should be easy to install. Ubuntu is known to be an easy distro.

Ya know, if you just wanted to get a general feel of linux before commiting to it by formatting etc..... then download somethign called "Knoppix LiveCD" its pretty good because it runs Knoppix off of the CD, you dont install anything and if you wanna stop using it then reboot and take the CD out, its amazing. Uses RAM as a kinda storage space

He's used ubuntu live, but I'm sure knoppix is better.

Just go with ubuntu for now. If you enjoy it and gain a bit more knowledge, you can make the switch to a more hardcore distro.

Goodluck!

Thanks for all your replies.

Im gonna download the full Ubuntu distro when ive got time and do what you all said.
Thanks
