Linux Questions

I think what you mean is will Linux run your Windows games?

Answer: Probably not.

ID Software games tend to run (UT2004, Quake 4, Doom III), other games MIGHT run under Wine (free) or Cedega (small fee).

There are of course games designed to run only under Linux as well.

If you are a hardcore gamer then you'll want to stick with Windows.

Is it better than Windows?
Apart from gaming, I would say yes.

It's a lot more stable, a lot more customisable, no viruses, spyware, malware etc, it's free, you don't have to mess about with activation every time you install, new versions are out very regularly, in some cases every 6 months.

It really depends what you use your machine for. If your life revolves around an MS only package then you would probably prefer Windows.

What is Linux good for?
Everything really, apart from hardcore gaming as mentioned.

Linux is good for servers, and being stable and free.

It's ideal for people who don't need specialized uses.

Gamers, or people looking for multimedia editing need not apply.

It can be used for typing, surfing the web, and being used as a business server.

I was just looking for an OS to build a slim budget PC with, I have all of my records in Quickbooks, about 1300 clients with info and I also have my inventory in my part warehouses, yeah, I don't want to fix something that is not broken. I need a nice inexpensive PC that will be used by the actual owner to view inventory and schedules.

Thanks

You are obviously well established with Quickbooks and XP can be run on a budget PC, so I'd stick with that.

I know but XP home is $90 and XP Pro is $140..........Might as well get pro, I can use remote access so I can screw with the server computer from home

from school??? I wonder if the computer tech at school has some way of pulling me a copy or getting me one for cheap

if you are a student you can sometimes get a free copy via their MSDN subscription (only colleges really offer this) or qualify for educational pricing.

as for gaming

You can run a lot of newer games via WINE, but the Linux community is still waiting for the devs of these major games to make a native linux installer. Some games that run via WINE run well while others run like crap.

It is only a matter of time before Linux starts running windows applications natively. Then no one will be forced to use a crappy OS like windows.
