linux says my hard disk is failing

i have a compaq laptop i wanna make it a dual boot for linux mint 8 and windows xp but mint 8 says my 100 gb disk is failing? anyone wanna help?
 
Can you give us the exact error message? How is it that Linux is telling you that the HDD is failing if it isn't even installed yet? *confused*

Did you try running Scandisk from XP?

Windows does the same. If the hard drive has a problem it gives a warning saying it recomends against installing it on that drive as it is failing.

I agree with running scandisk.

Also download HDtune and run the diagnostics utility on that, as well as looking at the health report

and also use the manufacturer diagnostics tool. Who is the manufacturer of your drive, then we can send you a link to the tool to download :)
 
exact message is "gdu notification-Daemon" a hard disk may be failing one or more hard disks are reporting health problems
100 gb hard disk-ata st9100829as disk failure is imminent
