linux screen resolution

well i just installed linux and i have dual monitors, at first boot my screen resolution was like huge like 640X480 this was not going to work, i changed it, and now the other monitor only works, and i dont have my normal 1028X768 resolution, what do i need to do to make this thing work

what Distro are you using. I've had a few problems with resolution before on a few installs. Using the same Live CD, it would sometimes load 600x480 and 1280x1024. Whatever the Live CD loaded as would be how it would Install it. I always just reloaded the Live CD and it usually went back to 1280x1024.

you need to do some of the following

download a driver for your video card for linux, a lot of times the default install of linux uses a generic driver

edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to add in the proper resolution support

well the problem i think is the fact that i am using a crt and a lcd monitor on the same gfx card. i would really like to do what i do in windows and have on screen doing one thing and the other have the menu bar on it. still need help though

No, you need to download the Linux drivers from ATI or Nvidia and run them, because Linux OSes only install a basic driver and are not included in the basic install.

Certain Distros will look for the right one and install it for you.

there are no drivers for my video card which sucks, because catalyst works in windows with my card

He's using Ubuntu 7.10

You have to manually go in and edit some file (I think someone above mentioned the file) because it's linux, and everything is done the hard way. (Yes, I'm trying to piss people off with my linux hating....even though I'm using linux)

iv tryed the editing the thing in the terminal, but everytime i do it it goes to this file is beeing used and can nont be used

If you are using Ubuntu 7.10:

Click on System, then Administration, then Restricted Drivers. If your card can be supported, you will be given the option to install it via one-click.

It looks like there is no driver support for the 7000, which is an old card. You may be better off just buying a cheap ATI or nvidia card (under $50) for better support.
