Linux Terminal in Safemode

I installed Ubuntu from an Ubuntu Live CD. For a while I could not boot from the CD because my monitor would shut off. I fixed this problem by changing the resolution automatically set by the program.
But now, when I try to boot Ubuntu in normal mode from the hard drive my monitor shuts off. In safemode terminal begins, but I do not know enough BASH language to reset the default resolution. Could someone either, give me the commands or try to re-diagnose my problem?
I'm triple booting Vista and XP along with it, so I know all of the hardware works.
For any interested in doing this, install Ubuntu last so GRUB is in control. Longhorn(Vista) won't recognize Ubuntu otherwise.

try
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Then just answer the defaults. If you are using the radeon in your sig use the "fglrx" driver, if thats not there use the "ati" driver. THen you can accept the defaults but then when it asks to configure your monitor answer as best you can. When it asks for your computer knowledge do "easy".
But yeah, accept the defaults and you should be fine and just change the part about the monitor.
O and this post wont make sense until you actually run the script :P

Same thing happens. I set everything to the correct settings but the monitor still shuts off. Grub loads, I select Ubuntu, a few command lines show up then fizzle away, and the monitor shuts off.
I've tried turning on and off auto detect monitor, I changed from 32 colors to 16, changing resolutions... any more suggestions?

When your monitor turns off, does it just turn off or say that it is out of range?
Also when it turns off hit CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE and see if it takes you back to the terminal.

Nope, I tried the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace thing and had no luck. I have it set to the same settings Windows auto detected. I even installed the new 7.10, tried it and reset the settings to the correct settings. Is there a place where I can download drivers for my graphics card? It's an ATI Radeon X850 XT.
