What do you want to do with it? There are many different versions of Linux and knowing your plans or goals might make one "flavor" more ideal that others.
assuming you want it for desktop purposes use Ubuntu, very popular... very compatible... large support community. I also like Linux mint(basically ubuntu), Fedora (14 just came out recently), openSuSE.
Vampiric is right though if you have a certain goal in mind they might make a distro tailored to that.
Based on that I would agree with Quiltface and say try ubuntu. It's very users friendly, the only down side is you might not learn as much about Linux as you would if you where to use something like Gentoo.
