so, if he has linux on one partition(drive) and windows on another, that ain't gonna mess up the booting process?

i know having two versions of windows on two different drives tends to make computers freak out a little bit (or so i've heard)

My wife’s computer has windows and Linux on two separate drives. It works perfectly. I installed Windows first, and left the other drive unpartitioned. When I installed Linux it configured everything automatically, including boot loader.

Note: I use SuSE, which does a very good job of the partition process, and uses the Grub boot loader by default.

so, as long as i install windows first, i should be good to go then right?

have you heard anything about what i was talking about, having two versions of windows installed at the same time causing problems?...i've heard of this, but i've also heard of people having more then one...i didn't really know what the deal was about that

i've run just about every OS combo out there.

For the windows linux:

Just install windows first on the first partiton then Linux on a later one. When you install linux (at least slackware, Fedora and Suse did for me) it will detect the windows install and give you the option of installing a boot manager such as grub. That will take care of switching. If not, you can install the boot manager yourself or I think you can even just modify your boot.ini file.

For 2 versions of windows:

If both are the NT kernel (NT, 2000, XP) you will have no probs. Just install one then the other. If you are installing an NT version and a 9x version then they get picky. I think 9x needs to be on the primary partition or it won't boot.

Only problem here is that you must have heard that from a Linux fanboy. What they should have told you was the good and bad of both OS's. See if you like to play lots of games and want to be guaranteed compatibility with that new piece of hardware then usually Windows is your best OS. If you just want to surf the Internet use office apps and play maybe the occasional game then Linux is great. Linux is a perfect choice here as you basically don't need Virus software and worry about that virus/spyware the way windows users do. If your a bright fellow then you'll get the hang of Linux rather quickly but for the allot of people they just don't seem to have what it takes or are just not interested in the learning curve of the OS.

Depending on your intentions then either can be said to be the best OS. Obviously there are way more to both OS's then I've mentioned here but you get the idea I'm sure. Also I happen to love Linux.

Linux is a LOT safer than windows. It is not easier to use but there are hardly any errors and you don't get viruses, spyware or adware.

And if you are new to linux i would suggest suse, its the best for new users.

that's definatly the way i wanna go, but i'm sure there are programs and such out there that require windows to actually work
