Linux

It's free :)
There is no viruses.
Check here: http://www.michaelhorowitz.com/Linux.vs.Windows.html
and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Windows_and_Linux.

I'm not a linux user but I can assure you, that linux users will tell you that it is worth a lot more than windows.
And about benefits over windows? You'll hear that linux has only benefits over windows.

From windows fans...probably different story :)

I know people with linux/windows dualboot with linux only for internet and windows for everything else.

As faras I know the issues are only from windows side ( ).
What I mean is partition format. Windows can't see (and read) linux partition (EXT2, EXT3...).
Linux don't have a problem with reading NTFS though.

free is always good... but arent there any windows/linux compatibility issues?
(im a linux knownothing)

With some software yes, in that you cannot install it under Linux e.g. some of the Adobe products.

As far as file formats go, no.

.doc and .xls which are a Microsoft Office format can be opened under Linux using the likes of OpenOffice (free equivalent of MS Office). You can also save as .doc, .xls etc.

If Windows is causing you problems or you just fancy a change then it is worth putting in the time and effort with Linux. What I mean by this is that it's a different OS, so you have to learn how to use it, not that it's time consuming to use.

For you average user, is Linux worth while?

does it have any benefits over Windows?

It's free.
Upgrades / new versions are free.
No viruses, spyware, malware.
Greater stability.
Most software is free and located in repositories which makes locating and installing it easier.
Lower system requirements.
Just about everything can be customised.
Much better eye candy than Vista (if you are into that - will require some configuration though)
Very knowledgeable community support.

I would suggest you download the openSUSE 10.2 Live DVD. This allows you to run openSUSE 10.2 from the DVD without any installation so that you can try it out.

I am recommending openSUSE because of it's polished and professional look "out of the box".

openSUSE 10.2 Live DVD

Another one to look at is Ubuntu, whilst nowhere near as polished looking it's a good distro to start with.

Ubuntu provides a Desktop CD which is both a Live CD and Installer.

Take a look at this, just came across it on Digg:

Well it really depends. If windows suits your need then why not. As long as you have the money to pay for it:D. For most people that make use of their PC for entertainment you should go for windows (most games (strat/network games are designed for windows)). If youre into software development it really depends on what tool you are using. I'm into opensource and also a fan of multi-platform tools I'm using fedora 6 currently from red hat 9.
I think you should try. You should start fedora, it think, its has a wider community and a better support.
