Little cylinder come off board....

Hi

I bought a second hand PC off eBay and it arrived today. I was immediately concerned that the box rattled! Upon opening the case, it seems that the graphics card came loose during transit and has knocked one of the little cylinders (diode?) off.

I've attached a pic of the diode, and also of where it sits on the board.

Any view on what I can do? Is it safe to turn the PC on and see if it works? Can th diode be fitted back on? I can see where it sat on the board but can't get it back on the two little pins.

Cheers

James

That's a capacitor.

Depending on which one it was it can introduce huge amounts of instability to your build, or prevent certain functions from working at all.

can you get the seller to take it back?if not take the info of the cap and get another one.they are not hard to change.if you are stuck with the board anyway its worth a shot.

Thanks - the 2 prongs are stilling out of the board. If I get an identical capacitor I could solder it onto the existing prongs? - yes?

I doubt ya have the experience or equipment to even try. The question still
remains unanswered is why cant ya return it if damaged. There is a procedure
for Ebay but i dont know what it is. Then again the only reason i might try
is because i have a $150.00 solder iron. its temp controlled and and grounded.
The solder i have is for something like this (surface mount). and a little wider
than a piece of thread. Good luck. i would try negotiating for a return.

You could probably solder the existing one back on in that case. I'd be extremely careful you have the correct polarity, otherwise you'll see a catastrophic capacitor explosion in your face.

I'd 10000000x suggest returning it, getting an insurance claim, or opening a claim against the seller for poor packaging instead.

The seller has said I can just keep it instead of returning, so I want to try and repair. Just need to find where I can buy the right capacitor from...

Cheers

Incidentally, the one that has come off has left the prongs in the board so I don't see how I can solder it back on. There are two small holes in the bottom where I assume the prongs went through.

Likely is. And you would have to de-solderer from the bottom of the board.
The traces are very tight and will be risky to try. Radio shack might have it.
Ya can query at google your zip code and a electrical / electronic supply.
Good luck.
