Little help?

I am building a computer for the first time, i have all my parts in and its all hooked up, but when i turn on the computer, my dvd drives don't work. I have 2 drives running off one IDE. I set the jumpers accordingly (master, slave) and i have the IDE plugged into the secondary on my motherboard. Everything that i know of is hooked up as it should be, but i still get nothing. the little lights don't flash, they act as if there dead. I don't know if this is a problem with my drives or my power supply. I'm using a 520 watt power supply, and everything else runs fine. Any ideas? If theres anything else u need to know about my computer let me know, thanks.

well im assuming they are plugged in by a 4-pin molex connector. and ur psu shuld have extra 4-pins that arent being used. try switching the power connectors that you are using now with some others.

if that doesnt work and you have a psu laying around, try using it to power the drives.

I have a smaller power supply that came with the case. i think its 400 something watt. diddn't do much, maybe i'm just running to much and i need a bigger power supply?

try to connect one of the drives to a power connector which isnt used.
You can math it out and figure out what your load is on that single line.

Well I connected just one of my drives to a power connector all its own and still nothing. I know the drives are fine because i just hooked them up to a different computer and they both worked fine. Do you think i just need a bigger power supply than 520? Its aggrivating because i've been waiting a month to get all these parts and i'm anxious to try it out.

can the drive doors open at all when you push the button?
maybe bad ide cable or bad port on mbd making it seem like a power issue?
just an idea

EDIT: if you're worried about it not being enough power, try connecting just the bare neccessaties. (mbd, hdd, fans, and then the cd drives?)

The Drive doors don't move at all, and the little lights on the front don't blink or anything which makes me think its just not getting any power. I've also tried connecting as little as possible, but still no good. I've tried every molex connector i have, and i've tested each connector on a different device. This is a very odd problem. I would think that if my power supply couldn't power it, that other things wouldn't work as well, or many not even turn on at all.

I've got them both to work now, but its only when the IDE cables are not hooked up, does this help narrow the problem down at all?

that means the IDE cables are bad.

not neccessarily
it could also be ide port on mbd or ide port on one or both of the drives. probably cable through. try swapping just the ide cable, if you still have a problem, try swapping ports on the mbd.
if that still does not work, then it should be the idea port on one or more of the drives

The Motherboard came with 2 other cables, and those don't seem to work either. plus i took a cable i new worked from and existing computer and tried that, and still no go. Is it possible that slot on my motherboard is the problem?

Thanks for the help everyone, it looks like i'm going to have to find a new motherboard. Any recommendations for an AMD socket 939 motherboard?

Flexible. I just want to make sure it works with everything I have, including 4 memory ports. Probably nothing over 200 though, unless its really worth it.

hehe thats the one i'm using now actually. After reading reviews on it on some Asus forums.. i think i wanna stay away from it.

Well.. unfortunetly my problem still has not been solved. Since my original problem, my computer started to not even boot at all. I blamed this on the motherboard, but now that my new one has come in and been installed it still does not work. I even tryed a different case thinking that the pins could be bad. I've tested all the memory, taken out all my cards, nothing. It acts like its gonna start up for a split second and then turns off. Is there a possibility of my CPU being the problem? maybe my bad mobo screwed it. Is there anyway to find out for sure?
