Little help.

Hi, I want to build a gaming pc and I would love some suggestions in reward to the Motherboard, Video card and Processor.

First of all, I want a gaming processor (AMD obviously). I was going through the Building Computers 101 and figured an AMD Athlon64 X2 is quite good for gaming. Nevertheless I saw that a Athlon64/FX processor is pretty good also.

Figured that the Athlon64 X2 is more for multimedia stuff (multitasking since its dual core), but for a higher end gaming processor the Athlon64 FX is better.

*Correct me if I'm wrong.

I want a 64bit capable rig. Those processors fall under that category?
Also I want a motherboard that can support 2 video cards. I have in mind one MOBO the Striker Extreme. One of it's features is the NVIDIA nForce® 680i SLI™ and NVIDIA SLI™ Technology, surely this means its Sli capable. Forgive my lack of knowledge on Video Cards, but is NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI a video card? or just a feature?
If it is in case a feature, which video cards would you recommend for Sli. (Obviously supported by the Athlon64 series and the motherboard)

Lastly what should the PSU be? surely it will have to be higher than 18amps on a 12v line, right?

To summarize it all up:

1) Athlon64 X2 or Athlon64/FX or better? (For GAMING)
2) Video cards for Sli. (Not TOO expensive, mid-range)
3) MOBO that supports both #1 and #2 (Suggestions of any other MOBO are appreciated)
4) PSU

*ANY Suggestions as to what would be better than what I have in mind, please notify. As long as it's intended for a gaming rig.

Thank you for your time, in advance.:D

Ok intel right now is better for gaming. I dont what you heard from that AMD is any better but they are not. That striker motherboard are a socket lga775 board which is a INTEL board.

for nvidia dual card feature (SLI) you will need a board that has a nvidia chipset (570,590,650i,680i)

For ATI crossfire feature you would need intel's chipset or ati's chipset.

MY RECCOMENDATION WOULD be a intel core 2 duo e6750, e6850, or q6600 quad core processor which is better than any AMD right now. And for a motherboard i would suggest EVGA 680i A1

PROCESSOR:
e6750: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115029&Tpk=e6750
e6850: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115028&Tpk=e6850
q6600: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188013

The Striker isnt anything special. Its just a overpriced 680i board. Get this EVGA one. ITs just as good and costs less

Believe me Intel is way ahead of AMD (as of this point)

ALSO SLI ISNT ANY GOOD. GET A EVGA 8800GTS 640, 8800GTX, or 8800ULTRA

SLI is indeed good, but a single 8800 GPU would outperform an SLI setup of similar cost.

and for the PSU stick with major brands like Corsair, OCZ, Antec, and Cooler Master. If you're running an 8800 then you should aim for over 30amps on the 12v rail(s).

Hmm I see, apparently I'm outdated on information.

Anyways, as to what you suggested [trs]ALUMINUM, the EVGA 680i A1, on the Onboard LAN to get 1000Mbps depends on the modem I have no?

And what would you recommend between the e6850 or the q6600? The FSB difference won't be that outstanding right?

"Core 2 Quad" means it's 4 thinking CPU's? "Dual core" are 2 thinking CPU's, right? Is the "Core 2 Duo E6850" a dual core? or single? For a difference of $10 bucks, is the E6850 better? than the Q6600?

Impulse666:

You recommend an 8800 GPU video card rather than a SLI? how come? I mean whats the difference?

Got it, over 30 amps on the 12v rail.

your internet connection will be the limited factor in a gigabit (1000Mbps) connection. gigabit connections are great for LANs or for small subnetworks in your house or at work, but no internet connection can come close to needing that. the core 2 duo series are all two thinking cores, and are very good, but quad core will be the future. deciding between the e6850 and the q6600 is tough, and you will notice that there are many threads on this forum with people in the same situation as, you should check them out, that could help you decide. the reasons impulse recommended the 8800 over SLI is because most reviews and benchmarsk show little improvement by using two lower end vid cards in SLI config. it is better to get a high end single graphics card at this point.t he 8800GTX, or even the 8800GTS will give you excellent performance in any game that is out right now.

Thanks for clearing that up Cleric7x9.

I did notice the price on those GPU's, what would be a recommended vid card that is less than 150-180 bucks?

And what would be a good ammount of RAM to have? I always used 512mb then upgraded to 1.5Gb RAM and noticed great improvement on games, should I spend a bit more to have 2Gb?

One more thing, what could be a good cooling system? (I dont mind the price, just would like to know what would be a good system to keep my system up and running with no problem, and i would love to know what cooling system is considered "exotic" hmm sounds cool).

a 8600 GTS should fit your needs. unless that then a 7900GS. The ram supported on this EVGA is 800Mhz standard. I would recommend ddr2 800 ram. You might need new ram considering the ram you have might not be compatable. A exotic cooling system would be either watercooling or the thermaltake ultra 120 or Tuniq tower

How about this kingston for RAM?

About the video cards, it's a really hard decision, the EVGA 8600GTS seems to be really good, it surpasses the EVGA 7900GS with the 'core clock and Memory clock' while the 7900GS beats the 8600GTS by the Memory Interface. Overall which is better? (I would say the 8600GTS) how does the Memory Interface differ one from the other (visually speaking).

And for the cooling system, well I know NOTHING about them, and would prefer you suggest one, nothing more than $180, if price must exceed for a good quality cooling system thats ok, suggestions always taken into consideration.

Im not so sure about those 2 because ive never had a 8600 but ive had the 7900. I would go with the 8600 just because of Direct x 10 support.

And holy damn you must want watercooling if your spending 180 on cooling. But water cooling isnt everything. The thermaltake or thermalright i Forget but the ultra 120 will preform VERY GOOD like a watercooled system. You just need a Case thats Fricken Wide as hell to fit it

My watercooling system is very good. Swiftech h20-120 just for the CPU. its 149.99 at newegg

well i dont know a decent price for cooling system. Yeah those thermalright things are HUGE. I'll check other out (h20-120) and see what i like.

And maybe ill go with the 8600.

Thankx guys. Think I've got it all planned now.

Hi,

If I would build PC for gaming, I would build it on Intel components like:

Intel duo core processor, Intel 975 chipset motherboard, and 2 raptor hdd on a RAID :)

About graphic card any thing on ATI would be nice.
