"Local Area Only"

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place or not, but my friend is having issues with his computer. He is running on a network, and his computer is the only one that does not get online. He is running Windows Vista, and his signal is saying it's "Local Area Only."

Unfortunately, that's all the info I have right now, until I actually get there. I don't know if I'll have any internet access when I get there, so I'm hoping to see if anyone has any solution ideas.

I'm going to run the basics, of course, such as reboot, ipconfig. :p

Thanks in advance!

First thing I'd check is that the computer is getting an IP address from the modem, router, or what ever might be handing out addresses. If it gets an address move on to confirm that that address is in the same subnet as the other computers that do work. If that is true then try a different connection. If you're connecting wirelessly try running a cable. That will help to see if the problem is the computer or just that particular adapter.
