I having a problem with my computer. When I leave it idle after a while it locks up and the only way to shut it down is to hard boot , which i dont like doing. It never freezes when im on, only when its idle with exception to one time when it forze while i was on the interent. I have windows xp. I read that it may be heat? Or somthing with the powersupply. I replaced with the power supply with a cooler running one that i had but its still freezing. Any suggestions?

Not ruling out any overheating problem you may be seeing memory faults or problems with something that loads along with Windows. One step would be to reduce the number of startups to see if something you have running in the background is causing the lockups. You would use the msconfig utility to disable anything unnecessary in the startup group.

Memtest and a few other memory diagnostic utilities are available free of charge for running extended stress tests on the memory installed. Another tool to see if any system files have been damaged or are currently missing is the system file checker. You simply type "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt to start that up with the Windows cd in the drive. That will verify the condition of the essential system files plus repair or replace any found damaged or missing. Memtest can be run from a prepared floppy or cd burned with an iso image where you start the tests by booting the system with either. You can download that from one of two sites.
