Is there anyway to remove the log on screen for windows xp? I don't have a password or anything, I have removed the welcome screen, but I still need to log on, is there anyway to get rid of this?
You came to the right place to find that answer. A simple edit of the system registry can see an auto logon to the desktop. The instructions for this edit do have to followed correctly to avoid creating other problems. What you need to download is the free Winguides 2003 registry guide found at http://www.winguides.com/software/display.php/1/ For online review and other information go to http://www.winguides.com/registry/
Click Start and Run
Type "Control Userpasswords2" and press enter.
Uncheck the box for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."
Click Apply and Ok.
why won't unchecking 'use the welcome screen' option not do the trick, under control panels > accounts > change the way users log in? It changes the log in screen to the windows 2000 (classic) interface where you have to type in user and password and it won't display users at the log in screen.
