For no appearent reason this time when my wife booted up her laptop instead of just starting up a box saying "Log On To Windows" appears. It has a name and password line but for the life of me I can't understand why it did'nt just start as always. It's a six month old Dell with XP. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

somebody probaly went into control panel and into user accounts and changed the way they logged in.

iis there more than one account on there? like her, and one for u?

or just hers?

if just one, go into control panels>user accounts and if there is a password, turn it off

Have you tried guessing the Login and Password? You could try something like Admin for the login and Admin for the password(sometimes works).
