You simply type regedit in at the Run prompt and choose the three digit combination for a different color. The registry guilde works well when followed precisely.
"Open your registry and find the key below. Modify the value named 'Background' according to the color you would like in RGB (Red/Green/Blue) format. For example, "0 0 0" for black or "255 255 255" for white, and every other color in between. Restart Windows for the change to take effect."

yeah I have done it (I have one of my pictures for the family computer ) if you want more than just a different color you will need something like Logon Loader: http://logonloader.danielmilner.com/ on there website they have a tab about getting logon screens.
I did mine the other way.i didn't use any Log on programs and all. i went to windows-->system32--> and i deleted the file "logonui.exe". I replaced it with another one which i downloaded on the net. works fine .
