After I sign into windows I have a 25-35 second delay until I get to the desktop. The computer seems to just sit there not reading from the HD very much during that time. It never used to do this it always was almost instantaneous. Any idea what is causing this? I have tried to get everything cleared off my startup list, pulled disks out of the drives and unplugged my external HD. Still takes forever. I have windows xp on a E6550. How can I get rid of the logon screen so it goes straight to desktop?

However, you will not notice any difference on the complete boot time because it will stall more on desktop or windows explorer will not execute in the 25-30 seconds.
I strongly recommend a virus scan or a clean install, as free mind said.

I am defragging my HD now, I was VERY fragmented way more than I ever expected or have ever seen for that matter. I never thought to check that because this is a new HD and A new install, less than 2 months old. Hope this turns out to be the issue, it's very strange everything else seems to be working fine with no lag.
