Long time before network connection established. XP

When I used to do a reformat and fresh install of XP, my boot up times were (seemed) incredibly fast. For whatever reason, this time my computer loads all the system tray icons and then pauses for at least 30 seconds, before it even shows my network connection icon. Then it connects perfect and then everything else starts up fine.
My only thought is that I switched from AVG to AVAST. Could AVAST be scanning my computer before it allows a connection to be made to the world wide webs?

You don't have an HP printer do you? Some Hp software is causing problems causing the network connection to take longer to appear.

Go into services and disable HP Que...... Something like that. I can't remember exactly then reboot computer to see if its back to normal. I was working on a clients computer having the same issue and found out that it was this service that was stalling causing network to connect slowly. If I remember the exact name i'll edit my post.
