Looking at getting a new MOBO for 2 8800 GTX...

I am looking at getting a new MOBO that will handdle two 8800 GTX cards ,but all there is at the moment is 1.0 MOBO's. So what I was thinking was get a cheap MOBO around $200-$300 and when the 2.0 boards become more available get one of these. But my question is, will running two cards on a 1.0 MOBO work at 100%? Or will I be looking at a drop in performance?

What exactly do you mean by "1.0" or "2.0" boards? PCI-E 2.0? Is that what you're talking about?

Anyways, for the main issue: Do NOT get the 8800GTX (Let alone two of them). The 8800GT is just about up to par with the 8800GTX, and is a lot cheaper. Another thing, SLI is not worth it, even with a Mobo that has PCIE 2.0, the performance gain isn't worth the monetary loss.

Last but not least, $300 will buy you a lot more than "a cheap mobo"

*EDIT* This is my 666th post...no good comes out of that.

Sorry , yes I was refering to PCI-E 2.0. If that is the case then if you were to go a single card what would your recomendation? Don't mind the money side. The reason I was going to go two cards was because I was under the impression that you get a fair bit better performance than just one. Thanks

You get a 30% increase [give or take] when using 2 cards opposed to using just one. However, you're also paying 2 times as much, so in most people's eyes, it's just not worth it.

My recommendation to you, would be to wait for nVidia's new cards that are coming out soon, as they will be much more powerful than anything that is currently out. They will probably be much more expensive as well (just something to think about).

Don't listen to them. At high resolutions, SLI slaughters a single card. The kids here that are slamming the GTX's are mostly doing so because of what they've read on some moron's website, because most here can't afford one.

The 8800 GTX is amazing. I was stunned by how good it was compared with nVIDIA's old crap. Definitely buy it for that little extra. If all you do is benchmarks... ok.. The idiots over at MadOnion forums are probably your crowd. If you actually game (something completely foreign to most of them), then there's no question that you'll be awed by it's performance. Crank everything full tilt on a big monitor and you'll know why I don't listen to the little wankers that are jealous because mommy and daddy only bought them an 8600 GT.

Crysis? 1680x1050, max everything.. it will blow you away. Two of them in SLI? Mind blowing. Awesome. Do it. When the next gen of games come out, while the little babies are crying because their 8600 is chugging, you'll be laughing.

As for boards.. Try the Striker Extreme. I just put one in this machine with the GTX and the board is absolutely insane. Yeah, they've come out with all the misnomers and crap because they can't have one, they just bring out the old "paper smarts" from reading some idiot's website (anand and Tom come to mind).. but this board will handle anything. For $300 and the support for Penryn, you won't be sorry, I promise.

Up to you.. You can take it from people that *wish* they had them...and people that their entire knowledge base comes from Google.. Or you can listen to someone who actually has them.

Are you stupid? Why would you EVER recommend the 8800GTX now that the 8800GT is out? He could get two 8800GT, sli them, and blow the 8800GTX away (and for about the same price as the 8800GTX).
Hell, if you're going to listen to SirKenin, you might as well get three 8800 Ultras, as money is obviously no issue to him.

Or just take my original advice, and wait for the 9800 series...and then go from there.

Anyways, forgive me for trying to use a little logic...

most people dont have the money or the will to spend over 300$ on something other than a cpu. most people will settle for second best if it means they can save 200$ or more.

and just so you know (i assume you arent from america by the wankers remark) most of us in america dont use google because it is a pice of shit, we use yahoo because it works.

but you do have a good thing in your post... the striker extreme... i have the maximus formula-cant do the sli but you dont need that crap anyway but asus is a very very good mobo company

The only thing yahoo is good for is their instant messenger. Don't be dissing Google. I swear by it. And I bet if a poll was made that a very high majority would say they use Google than any other search engine.

Google is the best search engine on the planet. :P

Two 8800 GTXs will simply destroy two 8800 GTs. Yes'm. Eventually I'll buy a second one, but for now the one is meeting my needs. I will, though.. because I can. :)

I think the biggest thing is that for most people here it's a competition. That's why most put rigs in their sigs, boasting the overclocks, etc. It's who has the bigger e-peen.. And when someone else that has the coinage buys something better, the advice goes to hell.

Meh. Do it. It's worth it. Go big or go home kinda thing. :D

Well yes, two 8800GTXs will perform better than two 8800GTs...but they're also two times as much. I stand by my "wait for the 9800s" statement.

I still [try] to give good, non-biased advice even if someone has something better than me.....and yes, it is definitely a competition.

@SirKenin and vonfeldt7 ,I was going to go with two 8800GTX's until the 9800's are released and get a couple of the Ultras equivelent in the new series and if by that time 3 cards can be used to there full potential I would get three 9800's. However I hear they will not be here for a while yet ,so I was going to go with something that is reasonably good even if I do waste a few dollars in the proccess.

I have just started to get into Crysis and you do quickly realize how much you lack.

BTW, I am no I have more than you person, I just work hard to to be able to get things like this.

I also support Google entirely, and is by far my search engine of choice. You can't go wrong. I think I am about to make a poll on this topic.
