Looking for a budget laptop

I am looking for a budget laptop. I will be using it for office applications (excel mostly), web browsing, and emailing. A good trackpad and highspeed wifi support are a must. Looking for a short-term desktop replacement. I don't have a preference for a brand. Anything that will fit these needs for $250-$500? Also, where is a good place to buy online?

Is used out of the question? Because a Thinkpad of the xX30 series or xX40 series is okay, the 30s are more brick like, but have a better touchpad imo, and the 40s and 50s are ultra book class, with thin and lightness as a big factor, however they sacrifice on battery for that, but if you adjust settings, you can get 4-5 hours out of the battery. I have used the 430 and 440, and perfer the 430, tho both laptops are okay, just my preference leans to the 430. These can be had on amazon for about 400-500 bucks used, well specced out.

Have you looked at Google Chromebooks? Sounds like it would be a perfect fit for your situation.

Second-hand ThinkPad ftw! :D X210, X220 or X230 would be fine if you want something small. I'm not sure you'll find an X240 in your budget. Otherwise, look at the L and T-series.

(I wouldn't ever buy a Chromebook, too restrictive).

Chromebooks are fantastic for people who only intend to use it for office tasks, email, internet browsing, social media, watching movies online, etc. It has far fewer issues than buying a $300 laptop, trying to run a new OS, and helping less tech-savvy users stay protected with AV, updates, flash player, etc.
