My Original Post is at the very bottom here, however rather than starting a new thread i thought i would ask more questions in this one:

so from the replies i have found out that i am better building a desktop rather than buying. I have scrapped my idea below of starting small and messing around and i am going to go for it and make a proper desktop to use.

A friend on antoher forum suggested the set-up listed below however it is working out a little expensive so i thought i would post the set-up he recommended here and hopefully you guys could swap out some of the parts and advise me on alternatives due to them being better or to bring the cost down to around the £500-£550 mark.

No graphics card was suggested so i am open to ideas as i havent got a clue.

I am looking to use the computer for the usual stuff like internet, music, video etc but also want to play games such as call of duty world at war etc

just ask if any further info is needed that i have missed out.

Thanks

Hi

I was looking to buy gaming desktop but some of the prices are ridiculous so someone suggested that I should build my own. This didnt sound like an option at the time because i thought it would be extremely difficult to do and i am not an expert on computer parts. I was then shown a link to this site and this post:

http://www.computerforum.com/104641-how-build-computer-step-step-photos.html

which changed my mind.

However, before i go spending quite a bit of hard earned cash on building a gaming desktop i wanted to try and build a more simple machine.

I am thinking of building something that would handle simple tasks such as running Windows XP, running microsoft office, downloading and playing music files, video files, watching DVDs and accessing the internet but again its something i have never done so i am not sure where to start.

Could this be done for around the £100-£150 mark and what motherboard, processor etc should I be buying as i dont want to go over the top and buy a higher spec than required but i would also like it to contain almost all the parts (if possible) that i would be buying for a gaming desktop. (e.g i would want to buy a cheap graphics card so when it comes to building the gaming desktop it not the first time i have installed one)

Thanks in advance and hopefully you can make out what i am looking for from my explanation

i think the best idea here would be to buy a cheap pre-built computer off ebay and take it apart and put it back together!

seriously as long as you have a steady hand you will have no problems, building a pc is so easy these days!

Yeah I agree, pick yourself up an old bomb and have a few run through's on that first, It wont take long to get comfortable with doing it.

for me the awkward part was the thermal paste!

but now the new cpu's already have the thermal pads on the back of the cpu/heatsink..

seriously you have nothing to worry about, have a look on youtube see if there are any video tutorials on building computers!

Or another Idea to possibly use an old pc if you have one, so that you dont have to worry about wasting any money.

thanks for the replies

i never thought of buying an older comp and taking it to bits - think i'll give that a try

when i said £100-£150 i was talking about everything - even if it was 2nd hand

thanks again

please read the first post on this thread.

i have amended it to ask new questions rather than creating a new whole thread.

thanks
