Hello,

I am an incoming college student and am looking to purchase a laptop for school/life...

The budget is about $800 with $700 being better....$800 is the maxing meaning tax and shipping and everything......

I need the computer to be able to handle multiple running applications ie (6 websites at the same time with no lag) also need it to be able to run various software...95% of the use will be college school stuff (MS office, adobe, basic stuff) and mid-range web browsing...however i would like the comp to be able to run upper-mid range mmorpg without lag ( I am thinking 128mb or better graphics card)....but most importantly I want the best machine for the least amount of money....I need it to last 3 or so years and I need it to be able to take constant use over long periods of time ( I am going to college and this will be my primary personal machine).....Also I do not mind buying a comp and then upgrading certain parts on my own....piecing together is not an issue as long as it is not a huge hassale..........

If you give a suggestion plz explain why.....

Thanks
Zack

Theres not a lot you can upgrade on laptops. your pretty much stuck with what you buy unless you want to shell out a good chunk of money. As far as the computer goes id stay far away from dell...they are cheap cuz the parts are cheap and the hinges on dell laptops are HORRIBLE

I was thinking maybe lenevo....toshiba....hp....

What you guys think about gateway laptops?

are AMD processors just as good as intel?

Amm,,,I am not sure how much tax you'll need to pay. Anyway, I suggest you go for something with delicated graphic card and here are some laptop you may want to consider...
I personally prefer intel than AMD...

Among the list, my first choice would be TOSHIBA Satellite A505-S6969, but it would probably over budget. Then second with Acer Aspire AS5739G-6132. Third with Acer Aspire AS6930-6942

I have heard that Acer laptops are absolute crap and break down on a regular basis...is this information accuarate?

What is the performance difference between DDR3 and DDR2 memory and what is the difference between the 677 mhz and 800 mhz operateing speed of that memory?

Will a 2 MB cache be enough.....?

Why do you prefer intel over AMD?

Thanks....

I personally don't have problem with my old Acer. Acer is cheaper when you compare other brand with same specifications. It would down to you if you want to pay more for a better brand.

The difference between DDR3 and DDR2 is not huge.

I have no idea if 2MB cache enough for your application. But it is what you can afford.

I have a quick look for the laptop CPU benchmark, it appearant to me intel is better than AMD with the same price point...
