Looking for a pc for my Grandparent,s PC

good point... didn't think about that

are you looking for a used one that someone might be able to see you or are you looking for a brand new one and want opinions on where to find it?

On tigerdirect they have a 19" fujiplus monitor for 200 after rebates. the image quality on mine is amazing.

The lcd would be easier on the eyes than a crt and I can use the bigger screen resolution and still have some desktop room.
I'm looking for something new and not a refurb.

Dell 2400 desktop, we got it for $274.99. My parents have it, good enough for anything but gaming...

for emailing and talking to friends i wouldnt get them an amd processor althought the one u have found them is a pretty good deal.

Seriously, all they'll be doing is email and the web! First off, those specs are a bit high for those tasks. I was going price-wise. Why spend all that when there's other computers for under $300 that will get the task done?

If they just want to go online and do email, MSN or MS has a kb device that plugs into a tv, i think it has dial up only. The qualiyy of the picture will depend on the tv also, the one I saw was hooked to a digital tv.
There is a lady in my church that has a device a little bigger then a kb that has an LCD display, she uses this for sending and receiving email only using earthlink.
Here is a link

the only other suggestion is get them a pc from someplace local that has a maintenance contract that they can call and a tech will come over.
do not get the cheapest pc or the most expensive. Do not get a cute minatureized pc, these usually have too small of a power supply. Do not get an e-machine. Learning their pc they are going to be timid and it will seem overwhelming to them. If you live near by I would suggest spending a few Saturdays training them, or try to find a non rude , tech that will not make them feel stupid. Try local pc shops ( pc+ maintenance+unlimited free visits ) or a place like Best buy ( i have no idea what they are like ) or compusa ( unfortunately i know what they are like, yours may be not as rude employees)

Yes but if you add the 17inch LCD monitor to the dell it comes to around $509 not under $300. I'm only the computer guy in the family not the money if my dad dose not want to get my grandparents a dell then there not getting one.

I just wanted to also say if you go the LCD WAY most monitors the stand can be detached an there are 1/8 in bolt holes in the back for hanging the LCD on the wall, you either fashion your own with 2 bolts an some piano wire and hang it like a picture or buy a bracket that attaches to the lcd, I think you can do this for the tv if you upgrade their tv to digital.. if it is a tv or larger then 17" mon I would use the bracket. I have seen a few LCDs that you can not do this too, but the norm seems to be that you can.
I have both a 17" monitor and a 13" LCD TV I have done this with.

yeh compaq computers are really cheap but sufficient. my friend has a compaq computer and it works pretty well. he does the same thing that ur grandparents wanna do (e-mail and whatnot)

I also just realized the points these other ppl were making about the LCD monitor. That's definitely gonna pile on a little more money. The only company that would throw in a free one would be Dell but since ur grandfather doesn't like Dell, ur kinda not in the best place.

I wouldn't be that picky about my system if i was only going to use it for minimal reasons. but anyway...

try the compaq system or even the tv method. the tv internet is so easy, i've done it before. they will come and install it onto your tv and then ur on ur way. all u have to do is press one button on ur remote and it switches from television to internet. plus, the screen is really big so i dont think they would have a problem seeing anything on the monitor/tv screen.

good luck

i must say... with an emachine computer u have to do some thorough inspection of it... my emachine was $598.00 to be exact and it sucks... i've had to run the system restore disk 5-6 times already and i've only had it under a year
