Looking for a program to automatically turn down volume on shutoff.

I always forget to turn off the volume on my computer when I'm done with it, so when I turn on my computer in class, it plays the start up sound really loudly. I'm looking for a program that will automatically turn the volume all the way down when I shut down my laptop. I know there is a program that does this for OS X, but I need one that does this for Windows XP. Does anyone know of such a program?

If it's a laptop just hit the mute button if you have one.

It seems to be a MacBook, linkin. They don't have that usually. And they make the Macintosh startup chime the instant you turn them on, so even if there was a mute button, you couldn't use it for that anyway during the first few seconds.
