something's wrong with my friend's computer...here's what's goin on:

1. computer powers up but no POST
2. mointor's led stays orange but monitor works when i put it up to mine
3. hard drive is good..i put it as a slave on mine and i can get to it
4. cpu fan turns on but i'm not sure how to tell if the cpu is fried or not
5. cd drive opens/close so i'm not sure what's goin on

haven't been able to test the memory cause i can't tell what board it is..someone built it for her..i know it's a amd board...i think there's something goin on with the mobo  cause if it's the cpu or memory..it would atleast post or give me errors? it has a onboard monitor port and no video slot so i can't try a different video card...any help would be cool thanks

Are you getting any video at all? If not then its probably a gfx problem. If you don't have a AGP slot there are PCI graphics cards (MX 440, Radeon 7000 I know have PCI versions). Also, if its a memory problem you should be getting some beeps.

no video at all...i was goin to try a pci card but i dont have those kinda things layin around haha...i think it's somethign along those lines but it was odd cause it was working fine one min, got video on monitor..restarted the computer and it was gone...and there was no beeps or post so i dont think its the cpu or memory

the boards a socket A..so they're pretty cheap and she's on a light budget...i can either get a whole new board or a pci card...unless someone else thinks something else could be wrong?

Well my friend is currently having the same (almost) problems. When you DO get video do you get wierd graphical and color distortions? If so then it could possibly be the AGP port OR the graphics card. If the monitor is echoing (like double text) then it could be the monitor problem. Best thing to do would be to find a PCI OR another AGP card to test the mobo AND see if it's the card at the same time.

well i got the thing to work:Di had to take out the cpu and memory and eveyrthing powered up just fine...but now because it was infected with so much spyware and sp2 it freezes before i can finish a scan or remove sp2 from he rmachine..even in safe mode

Ok how about we get some actual part names? ;) Then we can hopefully get somewhere ... as things stand too many variables

ok this is buggin me now...i installed a fresh copy of windows xp pro on her hard drive, put her hard drive as primary master in my machine and boots up just fine.

now i take her hard drive, put it back into her machine (amd socket A), it boots but windows dont start. if i go into bios and do too much it would freeze...when it gets to the windows boot bar it would freeze..basically, it would freeze with anything. however it had windows xp on it before so i dont understand what is wrong...anyone? *cough* praetor *cough* :P

having the side panel off can make it hotter
Realistically only in the summer (or if the yearly ambient temp is crazy high)

Yes, it ruins the circulation of the case and ends up not cooling (or warming).
Not if the ambient temp is much lower :P
