What text’s are available that explain questions like this:

How does an email or a request to find a Web site, from my computer travel through various points (servers etc.) and reach its destination. What happens if it can’t reach its destination (does it just keep circulating out there in etherland or does it terminate?

I’m trying to learn some basics of computers and internet and need some simple explanations. Are the any books for novices?
