Looking for help with slow connection speed.

Hi everyone,
I'm just hoping to find an answer to my slow connection speed. I am set up on a 6mb plan with my ISP (Comcast), but test after test shows that I'm not getting more than 3mb. I called Comcast and they claim that everything is working properly on thier end.
Any suggestions on where I could start on finding this lost speed?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

do you have a router?

whats the specs on your computer... (specifically your internet card)
 
i am paying for 10 and getting 4. It is because i am in a copper wire area.

Unless you are in an area that has been layed with fibre optic cables you are still using copper which will pull no more than 4 or 5 mb/s.

It will go lower if alot of people are online at the time in your area or with the same ISP, because then it will have higher density on the cable and the ISP servers
 
OH YEA!!! thats right...

let me explain how retar*ed comcast is..

Comcast only wants money... so they dont care about how well ppl can connect...
if a lot of people are on your grid at once, and are online (most are online 24/7 because the modem's allways on) then the speed goes down uberly...

now this is why i like clear wire..
Clearwire LOVES there customers, in fact its quite the opposite of comcast, if a lot of people in your area use clearwire, it makes the signal stronger. this results in a stronger connection, getting your FULL speed.

It might worth running a test on your Phone line to see what the max bandwidth you can receive on it is.

A lot of the time you wont get what is advertised by companies, they kinda rip you off like this, but thats the way it works.

also, if you can get you hands on one it might be worth trying a different modem / router or both.
 
Here's what I know,

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
NVIDIA GeForce 6800
Windows XP
Cable Modem: Scientific Antlanta DPC2100 series

Everything is updated with current versions/drivers.
I'm not sure what other info might be helpful (let me know).
The only other thing that I've thought of is that I have a 50" coaxial cable running from wall plate to modem. Would this effect speed?

Many factors affect it. Assuming Comcast is truthful, then things such as wireless internet and distance will affect you. How far away do you live from them? For the first few hundred feet (forgot actual distance), you're fine, after that you start losing speed.
