Looking For NAS Device..Recommendations?

I'm looking for a Network Attached Storage device for our home setup. (To be attached to the D-Link router shareport via gigabit port)

I'm been looking at some articles in magazines and online and have seen a variety of options.

I've seen anywhere from $350-$1000+ and its not so much the price but I want something reliable and fast!

I want a minimum of 4TB, Raid if possible, gigabit ethernet, usb 2.o option, and any extras are welcomed!

I've seen options from Seagate, Western Digital, Synology, NetGear, & Linksys..and I don't care on the brand--just the best and most reliable.

Anyone have some input for me?

Also, I'm in Canada but will be buying in the USA, because the prices are simply better in the USA.

Sorry, I haven't used any consumer NASes. All I can really suggest is checking out online reviews but I don't know how many real reviews there will be.

I would build a small form factor tower, load Linux on it and be done with it. Why do you want to run RAID? RAID 5 I presume?

Have the same question.

Information on this is extremely sparce and hard to find

THIS is what I've found that seems to be the best for the price:

Western Digital's ShareSpace...comes with 4 1-Tb for a great price.

Main downfall I've seen is...it only works with WD drives. A minor flaw, but still worth mentioning.

What few reviews I've found all say it's a great product for most applications. Only advanced users will find some problems with it.

I'm really trying to get more info on this stuff myself, and am literally amazed at how there's not more details out there.

With how mp3's revolutionzied the way we all think about music, I'd think someone would be jumping to do the same thing, but with movies/video/pictures/etc.

My goal is to rip/store all my DVD's, music, etc. and with the help of a new PS3, be able to access them from my TV as well as all computers in the house accessing this stuff too.

Seems like a simple concept, but again...having problems finding info.

I have a DS109j and it's awesome. Previously I was more along the notion of simply building a PC and taking that route but these things are just so much easier to configure and maintain. And if you want to get all fancy, it is possible to telnet into it and start punching in Linux commands. And heck they can do everything!

Oh, looks like 2.3 is out. I'll have to see about upgrading mine again :P

If it is literally going to be for storage, just build a small form factor PC, like a shuttle, and toss some very large hard disks on it and then slap Linux on it. Not only can it be a NAS it can also output audio and video to say a TV or receiver.
