I Recently built my new rig (ill put it in my sig one of these days), and I want to keap it fresh and new. I am not asking for anti spyware or anti virus or what not. I want to be able to revert back to the state of just after installing windows, in case I totally screw up windows. I dont mean windows recovery either.

Case in short, I want to do this. Only problem is that they use partion magic and norton ghost. I am not the kind to crack and steal software. What I am looking for is a free alternative. Some free software that can do what partion magic and norton ghost can do.

Thanks.

Okay, I know a lot of people are afraid of Linux but let me ask you a few questions...

1) Do you still have your old computer?
2) Are they networked?
3) Are you afraid of using Linux?
4) Do you NICs support PXE booting? (almost every NIC does)

I use an open source package called DRBL at my work and create master images for all of our laptops and desktops and sysprep them. Then netboot them into the DRBL server and create a master image. Anytime I have reimage a computer I simply netboot it (no boot disk required) and pull the image off the server. I imaged a laptop the other day (6 gig image compressed to 3gigs) over the network using this method in about 5 minutes. It has full support for NTFS as well.

If you are interested I can push you in the right direction and help you build it, but if you aren't interested I will just stop right here.

1.no
2.no
3.no, I have ubuntu running on my server.
4.I dont know, Im wireless.

Thanks for the idea, but I wouldnt use it enough to justify setting up this huge network. I decided it best to buy acronis, works great.

Thanks.

no it requires a little work and downloading one application, and you would never want to image over wireless anyways. Once you set it up it is very easy to make full snapshots of systems. I use it all the time

drbl.sourceforge.net
