looking for the right cable and software

hi there yesturday i made a family birthday movie in a mini dv camcorder. i wish to to put the movie onto a dvd. i was told by a friend that i need a certain cable which connects to the pc or laptop and hen you can record it off using a capturing software. im not a ver =y technical person so i dont quite know what cable i am looking for and what software.

my laptop has a 1394 4 pin slot 4 usbs

my computer has a 6pin firewire socket

You can capture it by using the Windows program that came packaged with your Windows operating system. My son has done it a number of times for school projects with editing capabilities. We have found better results with firewire than USB 2.0 for capture results.

There are anumber of video capturing software if you don't want to use the Windows option but make sure you do your homework because a number of them are bloated and sometimes the driver packages can be very buggy.

Your camera should have come with a firewire but if not do a simple search and you can find several different configurations of firewires that should fit your need that will not cost much.
