Looking to build my first (gaming)computer

Hi, I am looking into building my very first computer both as an upgrade to my own, and to be able to play games. I already have a case, and want to kind of go middle of the road. I've made a cart on newegg that's totaled slightly over $300. I'm so-so when it comes to knowledge of this stuff, so I was wondering if someone could take a look at my items and tell me if they will all work together and if I need anything else. Also any recommendations will definitely be appreciated. As I said, I am very new to this.

Thanks

What games are you looking to play? I have a similar setup and it can play most games on medium settings. You might wanna consider upgrading your CPU to a quad-core. It'll be better for games and multitasking. Is that the highest MHz of RAM your motherboard can support? Do you have an operating system? This is a nice computer for a little older games. Don't expect to play new releases on full details at 1080, though.

That's what it says under the specs. I have a windows 7 install disc. I haven't gamed on a pc since starcraft/diablo 2 so I am looking to try out some of the newer games. I have an xbox 360, and was thinking of either getting a ps3 or building a computer that can hook up to my hdtv and do the steam thing. At most I wanted to spend $500. I've never bought computer parts before, so I didn't know if they came with everything they need to set it up like if I have to buy thermal paste and a heat sink/fan or does that stuff all come with the processor? Do I need to get an anti-static wrist band or anything like that?

I'm sorry, I have truly read a lot of how-to's and guides, but it's really complicated on what's compatible with what. I just picked stuff based on what newegg recommended from what I had in my cart.

if you're playing on an hdtv then you'll want a higher res wich means a better gpu, a 5770 might work for this but i haven't payed much attention to gpu's cuz i don't have the money to get any anytime soon and if i looked now i'd be wasting time since by then it'd be out of date. and a better cpu would help and i'd spend a couple bucks more to get a am3+, or maybe just get the new fm1 socket and a llano a-8350 or 3850 or something like that, which is basically a 90 buck athlon quad at 2.9ghz, and a 70 buck discrete gpu together for 140 which is 20 off
