Looking to overclock AMD black edition

I am probably going to overclock my AMD phenom 2.8ghz tri core black edition. I have a gigabyte ud3p motherboard and 4gb ddr3 ram. Looking for some advice and what i should expect. will be my first overclock and am going to learn about it and do it in a month or 2. Thanks in advance.

1st off what kind of cooling do you have on your cpu? if its stock hsf i wouldnt take it past 3.2 multi x16 no vcore bump.

+1, exactly what I was thinking. Simply take the multiplier to 16 and bam 3.2ghz, no other changes needed.....but monitor your CPU temps closely after that, run Prime95 for an hour and see if it's stable and watch the heat. If it get's over 60c (doubt it, but...) turn off prime 95 and take it back to stock speeds until you upgrade your heatsink fan. If it stays under 60, leave it and in teh mean time invest in a good heatsink fan so you can go further if you want.

+ another.

That chip loves to be cool. I´d look at a aftermarket cooler when you have some spare bucks, then you can look at a vcore bump. 1.4v will take you easy to 3.4ghz

Take note that if you install another heatsink, your one year warranty that AMD gives you will be voided when doing so.
How is AMD going to know?
That stock cooler they sent me is still in the box. It was one of those crap ones with no pipes and it wasn´t going on that new 720.

also on speed fan I have never seen the CPu go above 22c but maybe my speed fan is broken? It is usually pretty cold in my room and I do have 3 120mm fans and 2 80mm fans in my small case. Right now it says my cpu is 16c.

Yeah I never put the stock cooler on the cpu. I am using this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103031. It was on sale at frys for 19.99 and its all I could afford at the time. I just want to bring it to 3.0-3.2ghz.

You should be fine then, even at 3.4 if you wanted. But 3.2 should work with the CPU at stock Vcore...maybe. Not sure if it will be 100% stable without a slight voltage bump, but you can try. A voltage bump won't hurt you running that cooler though, that one is way better than the stocker.

I find it so retarded that an aftermarket HSF voids warranty, when using the stocker is what would kill the chip if you overclocked to max with Vcore high also anyway.

I've had a few of those Cooler Masters Hyper TX2s, there pretty good coolers but just to a point. But the 720 like said is unlocked, bump the X up and when it gets unstable start bumping up the CPU voltage, just keep a eye on the CPU temp. The only problem you might have is from what I can remember, on those UD3P boards, they were pretty limited on CPU voltage settings.

You have the 720, it should do 3.2 on stock voltage. Atleast the few I have had would. Just raise your X(multiplier) to 16. If not just raise the voltage from default 1.325 to 1.350 and it should be fine.

Set it to 3.0Ghz if you are slightly worried and want to be extra safe mynes at that on stock cooler and its perfectly okay (ran prime for an hour temps 56ish). I messed up because you should buy something slightly better than the stock cooler like a artic cooler 64 pro if ur on budget and put it on from new but now im worried of stories u cant remove the old heatsink and thermal compound easy maybe I will get guts to do it sometime :)

Just do it with the computer warm, run a game for a few minutes before hand to heat it up. Then just slightly wiggle it as you pulling off.

Just a quick question can I remove the old thermal compound with a cloth (I dont want to use liquid, I love my phenom cpu)

Get some cotton tips (buds) and some alcohol, the stuff from the chemist(pharmacy) like 85 or 99 pure. Then just carefully wipe the stuff away. There are some vids on you tube to help you but it´s very easy.
