Looking to upgrade (and for advice).

Hey,

I'm looking to upgrade my processor. I don't know much about upgrading computer components and would love some feedback.

I currently have:
-AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+
-Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard
-GeForce 6800 Graphics Card

So, I guess my questions are, would updating just the processor work for me or would I need to update the motherboard and graphics card at the same time? Do all of the components need to be upgraded together or can I do one at a time? Is there a suggested order in which I upgrade each component? I don't want to buy a new processor if it's not compatible with the motherboard and graphics card, and vice versa.

Any suggestions on the proper way to upgrade would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

Hard to find info on that board, but this is what I've found:
AMD Athlon 64, socket 754

I wouldn't bother trying to find a faster cpu for that socket.
Even if you could find one, it would not be worth the minimal
performance increase.

That socket is basically 4 generations ago. Not only the cpu's
are faster now, but the bus speeds and RAM are too. You could
build your own pc with an AM2 socket, 4Gigs of DDR2 RAM for
under $400.00. That's a complete new system.

As a matter of fact, I just put a whole system together for someone else here.

I'll post the whole rig, but just look at the Motherboard, CPU, and RAM ($148.97)
and you could use your other existing components.
(we'd look at them as well and see if you could)

You can build a basic, low level AMD system for around $350.00 that will do that.

Grand Total: $340.93

Shipping would be around $30.

That board should work, at first glance. I wish Asus had a cpu compatibility page for their mobos.

Anyway, the only issue I see with that board, is the cpu I chose is not an
AM2+, so the RAM would only run at 800Mhz on that board.
The board states: *DDR2 1066 is supported by AM2+ CPU only

This chip is AM2+ but costs a bit more:
Athlon 64 X2 7750 Kuma 2.7GHz Socket AM2+ 95W Dual-Core black edition

Ok, let me just run this by you guys one last time. I think I'm starting to see/understand what I'm needing here.

If I bought the following:

Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131354

DDR2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227362

Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103300

Would these all work together? Would they also all be compatible with my current GeForce 6800 Graphics Card, or would the Motherboard's on board take it's place? Am I correct that the Motherboard has it's own 8300 graphics card, or did I read something wrong?

Thanks again for all of your time and help.

Yeah, the CPU, mobo, and RAM you have selected will work and yes your GeForce 6800 will be fine on there. It's just saying that the motherboard's integrated graphics is based off the GeForce 8300 chipset.
