Looking to upgrade my graphic card

Hello,

I'm thinking about upgrading my Graphic Card for my desktop. What exactly should I look for in order for it to work on my desktop? I have a GeForce 405 (OEM) as we speak.

Yeah you'll need a new PSU too. I don't know Euro stores very well at all though. Which do you shop at normally?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to graphic cards but why do I need a new PSU? I shop on French stores like rueducommerce.com.

Graphics cards require a lot of power from the wall and most prebuilt machines like that one have a really low end PSU that isn't enough for really any kind of video card.

Same card the second one is clocked a bit faster and has a better cooler.

If you know good sites look around and see if you can find better prices with those same parts. If you can squeeze a Radeon 7850 rather than the 650 TI, you would get some better performance, but only if you can afford it.

Just a quick question, do I need to stay with Nvidia or I can go with ATI or something else?

Thanks for your help so far :)

AMD or Nvidia is fine. ATI was bought up by AMD a couple gens back.

At the price you're going to be looking at a GTX 650 TI from Nvidia or a AMD Radeon 7850. If you're playing at above 1080p you might want to get a 2GB card but it's not essential. Both of those cards offer a 1GB and 2GB version.

It's borderline, some newer games will benefit from the extra memory, mainly due to really high resolution textures. It's your call, if you can fit it in to your budget I'd advise it especially for games that will be coming out in the next couple years. For now you won't notice much difference except in like maybe BF3, Crysis 3, or other super high end games.

I have a 2GB card and my resolution is considerably lower than yours. It was only 10 bucks more for 2GB over 1 so I figured it was worth it.

Also after some looking either the 650 TI or the 7850 will run fine on a 500 watt PSU so you can save some money by downgrading to this.

You might be able to squeeze a 1GB 7850 with that PSU. I'd take that over a 2GB 650 TI.

I'd just like to hop in and recommend the same card that Denther's got (the 7850 2gb). I do have a 500 W PSU, and it works just fine. I also have a 1080P monitor. I get 35+ frame rates on Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, and Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, all on max settings. So if you've got the cash, I highly recommend it!

Thanks for the info and help!

I will probably make the buy in the next month :). I'll let you know how it goes :)
