looking to upgrade my pc

Hey

So i have an i5 3740s 2.9ghz, r9 280,4gb of ddr3 ram,
a 500gb hdd disk and a 600w psu (corsair cx600m).
all in a big windowed red led corsair case (that i forgot the name of).

(i had no idea what i was doing back when i built it so its kinda random)

the reason for the upgrade is that ive had to use sony vegas a lot lately and its just super slow, well tbh everything is really slow.
(i also use this pc for gaming quite a bit and would appreciate a fps boost)

so anyway
i thought i'd get some ddr4 ram, a 120gb ssd and also maybe replace the gpu?

idk what would the best way to go about this be so i thought i'd ask you guys for help.

i'd say i have about a 500$ budget, i'd rather spend less than more tho.

let me know if you need any other details :)

Add more ram and it will help a lot. 4 gb is nothing these days, for comparison my home router has 8.

You'll need ddr3 if you're keeping your current CPU and platform. Ddr4 doesn't fit into ddr3 slots and isn't supported on those systems.

oh i see i see

so if i get ddr3, should i get 12 or 8 ?

alternatively, how do i look for stuff that supports ddr4 ?
also what exactly do you mean by platform ? motherboard ?

btw thank you for your time :)

What ram do you have now? I'd probably chuck or sell it and get a 16gb dual channel 2133 kit instead

idk exactly but it was stock in a lenovo pc i had, probably not worth anything

i mean i was planning on just getting rid of the 4gb one anyway, i could get 16 i guess.

should i invest in a better cpu aswell ?

(edit)
probably gonna get an 850 evo 500gb ssd and 16gb(2x8) 2400mhz ram

will that do the trick ?
