loosless Vs mp3

hi guys

just a quick question. i ripped some cds to put on my iphone, so ITunes asked me what type of file i would like my cds to be ripped. it gave me 5 options . AAC encoder, AIFF encoder Apple Loosless encoder Mp3 encoder and WAV encoder

now, i chose loosless as apparently it will make a better sounding song.but now i would rather more songs than better quality. so 5.7 GB turned out to be 201 songs after chossing the loosless format
. so if i chose another one say mp3, will i get more songs for 5.7GB?

what format will give me the most songs?

thanks

I'd go with MP3 or AAC, considering what your need is. Lossless is only necessary for backups and playback through high end audio equipment.

This, essentially. Unless your audio gear is really good (both sound card and headphones), you simply won't be able to hear the difference. Also, I've heard that at least some portables use up the battery faster when playing lossless files (and you won't be able to put as many tracks on it).

Given the abundance of hard disc space, though, if you're not planning to put these songs on a portable, you might as well rip them as lossless anyway (unless you're really strapped for free disc space). It may not make a difference now but *if* you at some point want to convert them to another format, it'll be as good as if you had just ripped them from the original CD (converting from lossy to lossy, say, converting from AAC to MP3 will cause a reduction in quality). Or if you upgrade your sound gear, you'll immediately hear the difference. Of course, if you don't plan on ever doing either, lossless will be no better than lossy for you. But I always feel a bit more comfortable with lossless (thenagain, my library is pretty small too).

And yes, lossless takes up a lot more space than lossy (mp3, AAC etc.).

For portable type devices like phones, mp3 would be the the most compatible. Will work in all the other devices too like mp3 players.

You can rip mp3 at bit rates from 128 to 320. For example 128 is the most common, and your 201 songs probably would have only been around 250 Megs of space.

On my laptop I carry over 8000 songs ripped at 128, and 160 bits, and that takes up a little over 16 Gigs of space.

this depends on the bite rate you choose.
generally speaking, 320KBS MP3 is about more than 2 times smaller than Loseless, and 320KBS MP3's quality can satisfy our ears.
so 320KBS MP3 is the best choice for good sound and more songs
