Losing disk space.

I am not all into this computer stuff but recently Nortons Security advised me my disk space was low. I am talking 300MB free out of 52 GB. Funny thing is I dont have any music, pictures, games, Word Documents or anything like that on here it is mostly for internet surfing. Everytime I restart my computer it loses more space on the C: drive. Help Please!!!

How many programs do you have installed, windows will need to reserve space for certain programs in some cases quite a lot. that why recommended space for windows is around 16 GB... when the install file is only 2.2 GB.
Also if you are hibernating it could be using a lot, if you put it into hibernation with all the programs running.
Go to computer, right click on the C drive, properties and click clean up. check that.
also if you want you could install Ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard, since the recycling bin, does not empty itself, and there are all these cookies, which you probably save, could run into GB of data, if surfed a lot without cleaning.

go to start search in the bottom left of your desktop, go to computer right click it, then select manage, then click on disk management, this will give you an overview of all you drives and drive space, check there are no unformatted sections, and let us know what info you get from there.

The disc clean up gained me 147,458 KB and the Ccleaner gained 1GB. Now I am looking at the drives and drive spaces in disc managment for unformattted sections and I am not sure really what I am looking at. It says LAYOUT-partition, TYPE-NTFS, STATUS-healthy, CAPACITY-52GB, % FREE- 4%, OVERHEAD-0%. I Normally dont have programs running when it Hibernates (only Explorer)

Thanks for your time

Most likely your issue is system restore taking up unnecessary space. Right click on my computer and click on properties. Click on the system restore tab and slide the bar to about 5 percent and click on ok. See how much space that has brought back.

In a similar fashion to what Johnb35 has suggested, if you're running Vista (and even 7 to some extent) turn off indexing. I lost nearly 50 gigs to that useless service back in the day.

I attempted to change my system restore to about 5% (its at 14% now) but it says that it has been disabled by group policy. not sure which group. But over night I lost almost .5 GB for no reason. Indexing is already disabled. I just ran the WinDirstat and it appears window installer files takes up 32GB of space. Are all of these files needed or are they taking up space? They are all MSP files all last changed on the same day. I click on the and it says preparing to install!?! (ie. ab11.msp, 2ed8ca.msp, fde80a8.msp) That is a fdew out of several hundred all being 46.1kb. Hope this is enough info. Thanks for the help.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Then click on fix checked at the bottom.

I checked the boxes and fixed the hijackthis but Combofix must have been a bad download from bleepingcomputer because it said it was a bad copy and now I cant find it to uninstall. Plus I still have the low memory problem. Thanks again for your help
