Loss of hard drive space

I recently got a Gateway MT3707 from best buy. It is a good laptop, with a 160 gb hard drive. The computer said it had 149. So, ten of that is partitioned for recovery. It says 139 is the size. After os, it was about 123 or so. I put a couple of games on it, which brought it back down to 115. I put a movie on it, temporarily, which brought it down to 108. I deleted it, and it went back to 115. A week or so later, it went down to 108 again. After a few more days, it went down to 103, and then 102. Is there a problem with the computer? I had adjusted the virtual memory, but I allowed it a maximum of 2000 mb. I hadn't installed anything after the movie. Thanks.

i wouldn't worry about it much... 100 GB is more than enough for you to use before worrying about having no hard drive space left... although if it keeps fluctuating like that, that would be a cause for concern... i'd give it a week or so and if keeps going up and down, without you installing/uninstalling/deleting stuff, then come back with questions...

Ok. Yeah, 100 is quite a bit. I was just curious. If hasn't fluctuated for a while now, but I was just curious upon why it would be doing that. I just wanted to make sure that something isn't faulty or something, because it does have a warranty. Thanks. Maybe it's just something with Vista? It has home premium.

i'm not quite sure... i used vista a while on my laptop, but went back to XP after finding very little support for my accessories ... but anyways, like i said, if it keeps on going up and down, i would begin to worry... but for now, i'd say you are safe...

You'd be surprised at all the stuff that is left behind just by doing daily tasks on your pc such as browsing, etc.

Most new pc's that aren't custom built where you bought from a store have a bunch of useless stuff that you might not need. A good program to get most of the is called PC DECRAPIFIER, which does what it says. You can grab that here:

Additionally, you should run a disk cleanup via:
START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>DISK CLEANUP

One last bit you might want to do also is download CCleaner which can be known to remove GB's of data.

Ok. I'll give those a try tonight. I just thought it was weird that the computer was losing that kind of space in just a matter of a few days. Thanks.

What your talking about is the amount of free space, not the size of the hard drive. The hard drive stays the same and never changes.

When you use the PC, data is stored to it, so it's perfectly normal for the free space to go down.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. I know the physical size can't change, but the free space can. I mean, I can fill the gas tank in my Cadillac, and lose the empty space, but the physical size of the tank won't change. I've had this computer for about a month, brand new. Geek Squad removed all the preloaded crap from it. I forgot to mention that I have been doing disk cleanup frequently. Usually there is barely anything there, but once there was over a gig (computer self-adjusted settings). I didn't think much about it, deleted it, and gained a gig. I restarted it, and it lost the gig again. Maybe it's just the computer setting restore points, like one user said. Thanks.

Restore points do use up quite a bit of space. But as long as you have that much free space, theres really no reason to worry about it.
