hey guys

I was wandering if someone could help me out with my new computer. Im trying to install the windows Xp operating system on to it..But at the start of the Xp setup like the formating part, i have noticied that it only shows that i have 131086mbs of unpartioned space, but i actually have a 320gb hard disk..On the bios setup utility it tells me i do have a 320gb hard disk, so the guy who built the computer did put in a 320gb hard disk..Someone told me its becoz i have windows xp (2002 cd) thus prior to the 2nd service pack, thats why it shows i only have 131gbs as opposed to what i am supposed to have (320gbs). But after installing windows, i did the update for SP2 and i still have dont get close to the hard disk capacity of 320gb...does anyone know what i should do? do i need to use windows vista??

thanks guys

Welcome to computer forum. we hope you enjoy your stay. please look at the forum rules

lol. yeah you need to repartition your drive to allow it. i think device mangier will do that. go to start right click my computer and go to manage. then go to disk management and right your c drive and there should be extend. if not you need partition magic or gparted

you may not need to install anything. also there is a slight chance that something goes wrong and you lose everything. a small chance tho

Well with that much space missing, i would try the program and if it messes something up just do a fresh install of XP and enter the maximum partitioned space

well no. there is nothing that will let you have 320 GB without the possibility of it having the data lost. it is rare but can happen

data loss? thats alright i havent got any data on it...i was worried it was gonna be like loss of hard drive space! do i need to install sp2 or just install the windows xp i have?

thanks soo much for the help

no it won't cause a loss of hard drive space, but since you don't have alot of stuff on the drive.. try one of those software tools, and if that don't work just do a fresh XP install.

thanks guys im goin to try it...right now i have no operating system on my new computer...so should i install xp without sp2 and install the partition program and it should be fine? is this the case with most big hard drives?

thanks soo much guys
