Lost D Drive, dumb error

I just installed a new 300GB hard drive, but didn't pay attention when formatting it. i saved is as the D drive, and now the cd rom has stopped working.

it's also disappeared from my computer and when i right click on my computer and click on manage, it isn't listed there either. it's a LG drive one, with no drivers to install. i'm pretty sure the problem has arisen because of the naming, but i don't know what to do.

You can try reassigning the C letter to the new 300gb drive if that's your host drive. Have you restarted the system since this was first seen? To reassign the new drive to C simply right click on the listing seen in the bottom window under "Disk Managemen(local)" when opening the management option seen on the right click menu. That falls under storage.

the problem is that i can't find the cd rom, which was named D before i installed the new hard drive. i named that hard drive D, and now the cd rom is useless. i can't find it at all under disk management. i re-assiged the hard drive to the letter E, but the cd rom did not regain functionality

So that was a second not replacement drive then. The question that remains now is whether or not you have restarted the system to see if Windows redetects the current drives installed. That would be the first step as Windows would then redetect the cd drive. If that doesn't see any result there are two things right off I can add here.

If you have a full install Windows disk onhand run the "sfc /scannow" command at the Run prompt right off of the Start menu. It's doubtful there are any tainted or missing system files but it can repair/refresh system files. The other option is using the system restore feature to go back to any date prior to installing the new drive. These are more or less obscure options. But a restart of the system is the thing to try there especially having redesignated the new drive to E.

With the new hard drive designated as E, I restored to a date before the installation, but when i checked my computer after the restoration, it was back as D. The CD ROM didn't work either. I'm wondering now if I should rename the hard drive to E, and re-install the CD ROM? It's the only solution I can think of. If that's the best way, could anyone tell me how to re-install it?

Did you try simply restarting the system first to see if that worked? The other rather nasty alternative is that the drive itself may have gone doa on you! That would explain why it suddenly vanished without a trace. Which cable is the cd drive on? Did you slave that to the primary drive or install it as the secondary master?

Is the new drive a sata or an ide type? When adding a second ide drive to the system as a slave to the orignal host the drive letters should have automatically shifted the cd drive to E there if you placed the 300gb as slave on the primary cable. The former D then becomes the E. You could try unplugging the new drive to test the cd drive to see if that is still good. Check to see if you accidently and unknowingly tugged on the cable enough to loosen it when installing the new drive.
