Lost data after installation..

Hi,

I just installed Windows XP professional. I removed my old XP (home), but I think I lost everything that was in my Documents and Settings folder (My Documents, Desktop). I still have the folder, but I can't open it because I made it personal in my old XP. (Access denied or something.) When I click properties, it says it is an empty folder.
Does this mean I lost the data in the folder? And does anyone knows how I can open the folder?

Willem.

I think you may have lost everything during the install, XP Pro put its own "My Documents" folder in its place and probably overwrote it all (all be it with nothing). You can try downloading some free data recovery tools and scanning the folder to see what it can recover for you.

the data is still there but he probably made it private so it cannot be access even running another drive to access it.

I still think a data recovery program would help, it would be able to deep scan the directory. And KOF, you,ve just reached 1,000 posts, well done.

Yeah I made the folder private.. I think the data is still in there, my C: drive proporties say I used 8 GB, that is about 1 GB for Windows, and 1 for Program Files. So there are 6 GB of used space somewhere. (In that folder I think.)

Is it possible to bypass the security thing? I still know my old Windows password and username.

Try logging in with that, your older windows user name and passowrd. You could also try giving yourself and administrator account, or loggin in as admin.

The older profile is gone after I installed XP professional. So I basically have a folder which I can only open with a profile that is gone. I tried making a new profile with the same name, but it didn't work.
