Lost files, no idea what happened to them

So my brother has a computer he uses for music production and he has several huge libraries of audio files, one of which is a ton of audio samples for piano sounds, the sounds came on 35 DVDs so that gives you an idea of how many files there were. Anyway, today the whole folder containing those 35 DVDs worth of audio files disappeared. There were other files on that hard drive (he has six 640GB HDDs, and there was another library of brass instrument sounds on the same hard drive the missing piano sounds were on that are still there.)

So basically he booted up the computer and found that his whole library of piano sounds was gone, but everything else on that hard drive was still there.

He said that occasionally this has happened before, but normally he can just reboot and the files reappear, he's rebooted four times now and they just won't come back. Does anyone have any ideas? He really needs the files back, so help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the full specs btw:

Intel Core i7 920 CPU
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Mobo
800W Corsair PSU
6x640GB WD Caviar Black HDDs
12GB OCZ DDR3 1333 RAM
MSI 4830 512MB GDDR3 GPU

there are services out there that can recover lost files, but they cost money.... what happened to the original DVDs?

Well, I managed tp get it fixed... it was actually pretty simple. I just ran the error scanning utility in Vista and it found some issues, fixed them, and recovered the files.

To answer your question, he still has the DVDs, but it was a pain to copy the files over. If I couldn't of fixed the issue the DVDs would of been the last resort.
