Lost phone

If you have an android you can use Google Device Manager in a browser window to search for the location, sound the alarm, etc.

There are other apps like Cerberus.

I don't know what is available for iPhone.

As Voyager said, Android Device Manager will let you track a lost Android phone. Find My iPhone lets you track your iPhone. Both can be used from a computer or another mobile device to track.

thanks but I want to know can you track your phone even if it's switched off or data is off??

You can find last known location using the products above, but nothing after it is turned off. As soon as it is turned on again, assuming it hasn't been compromised (difficult without password), it will report its location, so its basically usesless to anyone who has it if they don't want to be found. If you simply got drunk and lost it in a couch and now its flat, you're stuffed until someone finds it, charges it and turns it on.

Just throwing this out there... if it's a Windows Phone there's a phone tracking thing built into the OS too like there is with Android and iOS.

But yeah you need some kind of internet connection for that feature to work. That's the downside of these systems I'm afraid - great until the phone is switched off or the SIM is removed and the phone isn't connected to Wi-Fi, which would allow a thief to reset the phone very easily without it being tracked. :(

Very difficult to reset a iphone with the tracking application enabled. You must disable it first which requires a password and even apple wont do that for you.

It's pretty much impossible with Apple, as part of the activation process is it checks Apple and if the iPhone has been locked, such as with Find my iPhone, it can not be used unless they login to the Apple ID that was previously used. Even after factory resetting.

The Avira App will find your phone too, but you need to install it before hand. You can even wipe the phone remotely.
