loud hum when i tun volume up on laptop

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 and when i adjust the volume past about 1/2 way a large hum (sounds like interference). I have tried adjusting the volume sound device but it has not worked.

I have the playback set on IDT High Definition Audio Codec.

It seems to have happened since i installed Audacity?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check the setting of the microphone input. If it is unmuted, mute it and try turning the volume up again.

I was just about to post this because I experienced the very same thing with my new X-Fi. And congrats on VIP! When did you get that?

OP: Also try updating your sound drivers, and changing audio mode (speakers, headphones, etc)
