Hi evryone, (my very first thread , wooohooo:D)
two weeks ago i ordered my asus eah4870x2 you know the ati radeon hd 4870X2...
So i was playing crysis evrything on very high, and with res of 1650X1200.
But my framerates were like avr 25!? so i went to see what the activity of my card was, and it was 50-65 prcnt???????

WTF is wrong with my card, how can i do something about it? Is my cpu maybe bottlenecking it? tough i doubt this because its an q9550... can somebody pls help me because i am ver disappointed about the card right now

system specs:
Mtrb: P5Q-PRO
Ram: 2X 4gigs corsair dominatore at 1066mhz
vid: asus eah 4870x2
CPU: intel core 2 quad q9550 @ stock
PSU: Corsair tx750w
hdd: 1 samsung f1 spinpoint 750gig, WD 160 (oldy , i know :p)
case: antec 1200+2 ops fans

thx, boonet

update.
I forgot to mention: I have two screens, so i could see the activity+ fraps to monitor the framerates.

I also have used the newest catalyst drivers: 9.1, and patch 2.1 for crysis

one problem is the multiple screens, a second problem is crysis doesn't make nice with ati cards, a third problem is you have everything on very high

i can't see wy the multiple screens is a problem??
I know crysis isn't a ati game, but still, i see people getting like 40 fps avr with my card (evrything on very high), and how can u explaine the low activity, sometimes my fps is 20, then the activity is 50 prcnt, sometimes the fps is 40 , then the activity is like 84 prcnt.. I think thats the real problem.. Oh yeah, when i change settings to high, low or medium, nothing changes the fps, the only thing that happens is that the activity drops even more.. same with overclocking the card, i did it and it dropped the activity with 10 procent :s... real weard sshit here

having dual screens would be an issue, as it may devote a certain ratio of power from screen to screen (to ensure neither lag)
and yeah, Crysis never uses my 4850 above 70% either.. just not an ATI game..
i'd just make sure you don't have alot of other tasks going with your CPU (though i doubt its a bottleneck) and then try again with dual screens disabled.

ok for the dual screen problem, i am aware that this takes a little bit from ur graphic card, but normally with this card not more then like max 2 procent...
To watch the activity i looked with catalyst overdrive wich gives activity of the whole card...

Fps cap: i dont think so because at certain moments my graphic card begins working for no reason and shows 84 procent activity and gives like 40 fps... but after a minut or 2 i decreases again to like 65 procent and then the fps are like 25 average...

Then i am aware that crysis isnt a ati game, but still u can see random people on youtube, and on benchmarks people getting like 40 fps average with res of 1900X1200 evrything on very high, with 2x aa so dont think this is the problem either, altough it is a game for nvidia cards...

Wy would the resolution be a problem.?? i can't put my screen on more, i can put it on less, but wy would i do it if other people get a lot more fps on higher resses. I lowered the ress, and the only thing that happens is that the activity is even more decreased to about 40 procent used...

Can't the card maybe be thinking off giving enough fps but actually isent??
Maybe the card is to smart, but actually thinks wrong, i don't know but kinda like it puts himself onto 507 mhz gpu clock and 500 mhz memory clock when it only has to show 2D shit....

ok big big big update!!!

I have switched catalyst ai off, then maxed all the 3d settings in catalyst center, now i get like full activity on the first core.... at first i was super happy but when i went watching to the second core activity it showed 0.00 procent activity !!!!!! then i went watching what activity was with ai on and it showed about 60 procent more or less for both cores.. so... new conclusion: catalys ai on: both cores at 60 procent, ai of: 1 core on 99 procent and other at 0. In both cases the fps are the same... so i still dont know what the freaking problem is here...

It Crysis, it has problems with multi Ati Gpus. Mines does the same man so it is nothing to worry about. It sucks and hopefully down the road there is a fix for it.

Also if you got your CPU to around the 3.2 Ghz you should see better results. Crysis for me runs between 40 to 55 fps all maxed (very high) at 1080p but my processor is at 3.8GHZ

ok thx thats a very great help, ill get aftermarket cooler ( because intells suck) otherwise i get themps like 80 °c when i oc'd it to 3.145 ghz so thats not good..
I thought it had something to do with my cpu because when it runned at 3.145 it wsnt a great improvement, but it was already better..
Thx very much all ill give it a try. But then again, i have a problem, i am doubting about wich i have to buy: scythe mugen 2 who is at 41 euro's here in belgium, or the thermalright ultra 120 extreme RT 1366 (wich is with fan already mounted) wich is 61 euro's in belgiium, i know the second is best, but i think it is very pricy... So wich one should i buy ( best price/quality )

I have the Thermal Right IFX-14 and it is amazing. At stock speeds I idle at like 25-26 and load is near 37c.
Right now at 4.0ghz I idle at 36c and hit maximum of 67c

Looks very cool, ill look for it and compare it to the other two in cost/ quality. But when i see your results i guess it's a super good cooler, thx for the picture and the stats, thx for ur help, i hope it works with the cooler and the oc. today i am going to try with just 1 screen enabled, tough i dont think thats going to help it a lot.

I don't know, is a game like mass effect a heavy game or not? Because its the same with that game about the activity not on max. And when i oc'd the gpu, the only thing that happens was the activity drop down.

But no matter what im going to oc my cpu a lot:p maybe i don't need it, but it's just the tough off having a beast under the hood :D .

But still i bought my pc at the worst time ever, spended like 529 euros on my gpu 3 weeks ago and i could have the q9650 for the same price if i waited a week more :(. but then again i dont really need it.

so i ordered my mugen 2 because overall it was good ranked, well priced ( the ifx was 62 euros and the mugen2 just 41. and in most cases it showed better themps(because sometimes uneven base surface, then i needed to lap:P).)

when i get it ill start oc'ing and ill let you guys know the results

all thx for the great help, especially thermalreactor's

Yea np man. I am confident you will be able to get a good overclock with the Mugen 2. It will definitely make your processor the bottleneck instead of the the GPU and that's what you want. Please post your results when you start OCing.

You are playing Crysis at "Very High" and are getting 25 fps or so....you call that bad... most people can only dream of doing that mister and that too with only one card.....with two monitors at High Def...can you tell me some cards that can do that....N-O-N-E....except GTX295 which obviosly can after it.
Anyways Crysis was made by a team most of whom were from nVidia...pal....what do you expect...them favouring ATI? Noway nVidia meticulously guided/programed each bit of it to work natively with their gpu.....we can't blame ATI for the partiality on Crytek's part.
Do trial and error method
Anyways disconnect one monitor....try the game then...still unsatisfied...select physics quality to low(no kidding PhysX only runs on nVidia...when running on ATI..it will use your cpu for the calculations...causing a bottleneck.......if still unsatisfied...turn V-sync off(GDDR5 doesn't need it....it's just too fast...will be a waste and may cause bottlenecking).
If still there's a problem please change the 3D setting in Catalyst Control Center...check anti-aliasing to "use Application Settings" if your are running Crysis on XP or DX9.0c mode...no need of this if using vista or in DX10 mode. However if you are running 64 Bit(which is most likely) verison vista...make sure that you are running the 64 bit executable to play the game. Also set the "Wait for vertical refresh" in Catalyst Control center to "off, Unless application specifies reason same as v-sync.

What we are doing here is taking the nvidia only advantages....
Hope it helps...try it

ok thx for the good info !! very much thx. ill try all that, maybe ur right about the crysis thing, but still i have 2 gpu's in one so normally my card should do better, ill try the stuff you said, thx for help, but when i put it on different resses or quality nothing happens, only the activity of the card changes, not the fps. for now ill try with fysx on low, but when i oc'd my cpu, ill put it back on max. Oh yeah, the monitor thingy doesn't matter as i thought. but still thx for the awasome info.

I have tried messing with all that settings, res changes nothing. But when i change the settings all on medium: My average went up with 2 fps !!!!!! ( and activity down with 10%)not a staggering result is it?

ill be shure to post results while oc'ing, and keep ur guys in touch about the fps change.

There's one way you can run crysis well for sure...
But I wonder why HD 4870X2 would require such a step...but anyways...
Keep every thing at "very high" even PhysX ...only down the texture setting to "medium"... that's it
Keep Catalyst AI "ON" in Catalyst Control Center... your prob is real interesting. AI is required for crossfire...including internal crossfire in X2

Make sure you have Catalyst version above 8.12....cause 8.12 is full of bugs...ati admits it... download 9.1 if you havent already.....they claim 20% increase in Crysis performance for HD4800 series cards.... it was a similar for my HD 4850
