Low Memory Warnings In Windows Vista

2048Megabytes

I have had a few low memory warnings when using Windows Vista 32-bit Basic (had a lot of programs open at the time this happened).

My question is what percentage of your RAM is being used when you get this low memory warning? I have read the warnings start when your system is using 90% or more RAM, but I don't think this is accurate.

Is it 90%, or is the warning set to appear at lower memory usage? Also, are the settings different in Windows XP when low memory warnings appear?

I don't know if there is a reading, or whether it depends on the components of your computer. As you're running Vista, go to the sidebar, add a gadget called CPU Meter. It measures CPU usage and RAM. No need to download any extras or anything. Try it out and post back what it gives you.

You need to increase the size of your virtual memory,or even better buy more memory for your machine.

Well, I'm using Windows Task Manager to gather my data. I've got a ton of stuff open. Task Manager says there are 66 processes going on. I've got 1789 megabytes of physical memory. I am currently using 83% (1.45 gigabytes) of this RAM. My system isn't responding too well but I still haven't gotten a low memory warning.

When I got to 75% memory usage the operating system asked me if I wanted to close the Windows Hearts game. I will try to push it further but I may get crash.

I had my memory up to 90% or 91% (using about 1610 megabytes) and then my system crashed. The operating system didn't give any low memory warnings.

I do think that the low memory warning I was receiving was due to my virtual memory being set at 384 megabytes. It doesn't really matter to me that the page file size is that low because I have only gotten the low memory warning only about twice.

But this makes no sense to me. It says in Windows Task Manager that the system page file size is currently 853 megabytes and it has 2,124 megabytes available. What is the use in setting a low page file size if the operating system does what it wants to anyway?

Well, there is a low and max setting. I set mine to the same on both. That way its not constantly resizing.

I set my virtual memory settings the same on both as well at 384 megabytes.

It says in Windows Task Manager that the system page file size is much larger than what I set it to. Any clue why?

Add the CPU meter gadget in the sidebar, and get the readings off there, i have 2GB and run a fair amount of programs and it sits around 20% or so, right now it is at 50% and my CPU 4%
