Low virtual memory

I get this little pop-up all the time that says "low virtual memory", and every time I get it, every computer operation slows to a crawl. What causes this and is there any way to get rid of it?

You need to increase your system memory. Can you give me a list of your computer specs please?

1. Preferably what operating system you are running
2. and either model of pc if its a store bought model or model of motherboard if its a custom built pc
3. and also how much system memory is installed at this time.

by what operating system he not only meant win-vista or win7 or whatever else, but if it is the 32 or 64-bit version, a quick google will give you a how to as i don't remeber right now, and system memory generally mean ram, but can also include the pagefile i believe, we want to know the ram.

Dell store bought system, Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2

Intel Celeron CPU 2.40Ghz, 256 MB RAM

What model of dell is it though? We need to determine how much ram it can hold. Getting another 1gb of ram would do wonders for your machine, but as said would need to know the model to know what size sticks you need. Is it a dimension model? Still need the model number though.

Dimension 2400

Not to doubt what you're saying or anything, but it just seems strange that the amount of RAM this computer has has been fine for years, and now all of a sudden, it needs more memory? The only thing this computer is used for is surfing the internet, so I can't see why that would require more RAM today than it did a year ago. Do you kinda see why I'm puzzled?

Yes, I do but... You see all the icons down at the bottom by the clock? Those are programs running at bootup and takes up memory while in use. That machine has a max memory of 2gb so you can install 2 sticks of 512 mb modules and increase your memory. Also it will help out with the speed of the computer.

You must have installed more programs lately and you are allowing them to run at bootup. I will have you download a program and post the log for me, this will tell us whats running at bootup and see if we can't stop most of it from loading.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces
