low virtual memory

My system has 512MB DDR2 RAM.After playing games like F.E.A.R and splinter cell double agent when I get back to my desktop a pop up message shows that system is low on virtual memory and increasing it.What does this mean.Will increasing the RAM solve this problem or can be solved by increasing the page file?

Go to system properties->advanced tab->click the settings button under performance->advanced tab->click the change button under virtual memory. It would be better to get more RAM but virtual memory works.
